Music and Me

Michael Jackson started feeling the pangs of adolescence with the release of Music And Me

Following up on our series with The Jackson 5 Era, we've thus covered "Big Boy", "Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5", "ABC", "The Third Album", "The Jackson 5 Christmas Album", "Maybe Tomorrow", "Lookin' Through The Windows", "Skywriter", "G.I.T. Get It Together", "Dancing Machine", "Moving Violation", "Got To Be There", and finally "Ben". Now, let me give you an exposition of Michael Jackson's third solo LP, "Music and Me".

Music and Me

Like a mother with her children, Motown did not want to let go of Michael's boyishness. But as they say, "Autumn leaves must fall".

But they couldn't comprehend his vocals were in the process of being molded into something spectacular! Kind of like giving up something good for something better. Which is precisely what you'll see here.

You'll find a mix of tenor and soprano throughout the albums contents. With the profound innocence of Wonder's "With a Child's Heart" to the "Johnny Raven" tenor in his voice. Climaxing on his titled single "Music and Me".

If your dieing to find out how Michael sounded when his voice first cracked, then look no further! "Music And Me" has got it recorded!

1. With A Child's Heart

2. Up Again

3. All The Things You Are

4. Happy

5. Too Young

6. Doggin' Around

7. Johnny Raven

8. Euphoria

9. Morning Glow

10. Music and Me

Join me next time as I walkthrough his final Motown record "Forever, Michael(officially)".

MJ You Can Cry On My Shoulder

Ben the record ends with a rendition to another Motown rooster-Brenda Holloway's "You Can Cry On My Shoulder"(listen Here). I never was much into this tune. But they sure poured their hearts into it. Unlike what you see today.

MJ "Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day"

From his second solo LB Ben comes another cover to a late 60's tune. I love Michael's approach of interpreting Stevie Wonder's hit in 1968(found Here). You can even decipher the very first hiccups which would eventually become one of Michael Jackson's signatures.

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

What Goes Around Comes Around

On track 7 of Ben, Michael Jackson's old girl must learn the hard way of paying it forward.

Michael want's to teach a thing or two about cause and effect. "What a man soweth, that he shall also reapeth"(Gal. 6:17). "What goes around comes around. What comes up must come down"-Budda.

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

Michael Jackson My Girl

We start with a Michael Jackson reinterpretation from "The Temptations"(listen over Here) on his album Ben-"My Girl" which earned them a big break during the Christmas of '64.

Michael inserts a little more rhythm & heritage into his cover. Not to put down "The Temptations" in any way. Around my neck of the woods, they tend to repeat it on the oldie stations on a perpetual loop. So I may be a little biased.

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

Michael Jackson "Everybody's Somebody's Fool"

The front-side of Ben wraps up with another Michael Jackson rendition from a Doo-Wop clan named "The Heartbeats"(listen right Here). Mixing ab-libs from The Flamingo's on a 70's Motown Ballet. Listen below...

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

We've Got A Good Thing Going

Coming off as #4 from the album Ben. "We've Got A Good Thing Goin' comes as a dazzling antique Bubblegum Ballad. At 14 years of age, it's just amazing his voice hasn't changed in one bit.

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

MJ "People Make The World Go Round"

A remake to the Philly-Soul "People Make The World Go Round" by The Stylistics for Michael Jackson's Motown LP-Ben.

What a contrast this makes to "Money". The seventh track of his ""History" Album. Michael repetitively exclaims "Money Makes the world go round".
Overall, a Funkellicious rendition of "The Stylistics" version.

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

The Greatest Show On Earth

The "Greatest Show On Earth" was written by Mel Larson and Jerry Marcellino for Michael Jackson's second solo album Ben. Released on August 4th, 1972.
Hmmm...Never thought love could be compared to the erratic lifestyle of showbiz-Interesting.

Greatest Show On Earth

Ben-The Single

Ben spent 8 weeks at #1 one on The Australian Pop Charts

From the title album Ben comes Michael Jackson's first #1 hit. Also a soundtrack to a horror flick way before the days he ever mingled with zombies!

A boy befriends some rodent-A seemingly evil leader of a rat pack. Who has it in for human flesh. But when a friendship envelopes(something the rat intensely longed for), he miraculously changes his ways for the better.
I just love his strong vocals. Reminds me of when I was a boy.

Ben-A Comprehensive Walkthrough

The original cover to Michael Jackson's Ben album. It was later stripped over fears that children would be too scared to purchase the record

So far, we've already gone through Big Boy, Diana-Ross-Presents-Jackson-5, ABC, Third Album, Maybe Tomorrow, Lookin' Through The Windows, Skywriter, G.I.T. Get It Together, Moving Violation, and his very first solo album-Got To Be There. We will now be thumbing through the contents of Michael Jackson's "Ben" album.

Ben Album

The record sets-out on a mutual bonding with a killer rat. Who in Michael's eyes is a misunderstood deprived rodent. The amazing dexterity and passionate delivery proves "Ben" a sincere Love Song.

The rest of the album features outstanding covers by Stevie Wonder("Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day"), The Heartbeats("Everybody's Somebody's Fool"), The Stylistics("People Make The World Go Round"), and even Brenda Holloway("You Can Cry On My Shoulder") and The Temptations("My Girl"). "My Girl's" soulful remake and "People Make The World Go Round's" utterly fresh perspective stand head-and-shoulders above the rest.

Although "Got To Be There" may be a step ahead, nevertheless "Ben" still has an appeal only a boy could deliver from the innocence of childhood!

1. Ben

2. The Greatest Show on Earth

3. People Make the World Go Round

4. We've Got A Good Thing Going

5. Everybody's Somebodies Fool

6. My Girl

7. What Goes Around Comes Around

8. In Our Small Way

9. Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day

10. You Can Cry On My Shoulder

I hope you've enjoyed "Lookin' Through The Windows of Michael's Jackson Five Era. Our next stop will be "Music and Me".

Michael Jackson "I Hear A Symphony"

Originally by Diana Ross and The Supremes(listen to their version Here), Michael Jackson does a splendidly perfect remake of "I Hear A Symphony"! An outtake of what would've been on his very first Motown solo LP-Got To Be There. Michael's on-of-a-kind boyish innocence all the more makes this a gold nugget!

I Hear A Symphony

In Our Small Way

This brings back memories of simpler times. To that age where your heart is unedited and all things were possible.

Coming from his very first solo record-Got To Be There. The purity and exquisite on Michael Jackson's vocals will strike a chord within you.

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

Michael Jackson "You've Got A Friend"

"Got To Be There" comes to a deep conclusion with a Carol King cover "You've Got A Friend". There are many more renditions out there. But for the purpose of this post, I'm only focusing on Michael Jackson and the original.

Both I feel are fantastic. Michael gears more to Bubblegum Soul while King is on to Soft Rock.

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

MJ "Love Is Here and Now Your Gone"

A Supreme cover to "Love Is Here and Now Your Gone" coming from the album-Got To Be There. Maybe not quite up to par of the original(nothing could beat That). But still a great rendition. I wish Michael did those signature sobbing hiccups since this is partly where he got the idea.

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

Maria, You Were The Only One

The soon to be King of R&B lays one down on us with "Maria". From his first Motown solo Got To Be There. Who according to little Michael, is a "sunflower" chick from Mexico.
One thing I like about Michael, he loves to do just a little better!

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

Wings of My Love

A soliloquy that lands on #7 of Got To Be There. I love the harmonies on this Ballad. With mature vocals way beyond his years! This is prepubescent Michael Jackson at his best!

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

Michael Jackson "Rochin' Robin"

Michael Jackson revives an oldie and sends it to #2

Michael Jackson worked with Willie Hutch to revive an old classic by Booby Day called "Rockin' Robin(listen to it Here). On his very first Motown solo Got To Be There. Beginning Side-B on a fresh and exiting cover. With plenty of youthful energy and vigor. Coinciding with Donnie Osborne's "Puppy Love"(also a revived oldie). Both were child-stars. Both performed songs about animals. As a matter of fact, disgruntled disc jockeys roared "no more animal songs until they hire someone to clean the floors in the studio!"
Still, no one had a clue of what Mr. Jackson would be 10 years from now.

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

Got To Be There-The Single

Michael Jackson's very first single Got To Be There scored really well on the charts

What a great way to wrap up the A-side to "Got To Be There". His very first single debut as a solo performer. October 7th, 1971. Thirty years later he was to perform in Madison Square Garden only to be postponed by the infamous 9/11 attacks at ground zero.
Never will I forget that day.

Michael's powerful delivery and heartfelt passion are indisputably the reason "Got To Be There" went to #1! One thing I give credit to Mr. Jackson. He knows how to be relevant!

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

Girl, Don't Take Your Love From Me

Michael Jackson sings his little heart out on another Motown rhythm Love Song from the LP Got To Be There. A soothing Ballad from Lil' Michael. Contributed from the pen of and engineering of Willie Hutch(also The Jackson 5's executive producer.

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

I Wanna Be Where You Are

I Wanna Be Where You Are became Michael's most covered song

"I Wanna Be Where You Are" is a U.S. only single off of his first solo album-Got To Be There. The song was written by Warren and Diana Ross's younger brother T-Boy Ross. This Ballad became Michael Jackson's third Top 40 in a row! Scoring #5 for The R&B Singles Charts.

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

Michael Jackson "Ain't No Sunshine"

In 1972 Michael Jackson does a cover to Bill Withers Ain't No Sunshine

A single only found in the U.K. The song opens up Michael Jackson's debut album Got To Be There.

In pure electrifying innocence, Michael opens with a sweet rendition of Bill Withers "Ain't No Sunshine". A classic if not over-covered Techno/Dance hit with a little bit of Soul. I'd say both are brilliant in their own rights. But Willie's by far is much more nostalgic(you can listen to it Here).

- Michael Jackson Lyrics

Got To Be There

To compete with Donnie Osborne, Berry Gordy set up Michael Jackson as a solo artist starting with Got To Be There

We've already covered all 9 Jackson 5 albums. Starting with Big Boy, Diana-Ross-Presents-Jackson-5, ABC, The Third Album, "The Jackson 5 Christmas Album", Maybe Tomorrow, Lookin' Through The Windows, Skywriter, Get It Together, and Moving Violation.

Our next series will focus on Michael Jackson's early solo career with four albums from Motown. First, we'll be looking at "got To Be There". Released in early 1972.

Got To Be There

After the Jackson Five dwindled a bit, Berry Gordy seeing potential, gave Michael Jackson a shot as a solo. With energetic dexterity and vocal flexibility, this little "Smooth Criminal" sure pulled it off with "Got To Be There".

Whoever thought it smart to leave out "I Hear A Symphony"(another Supreme cover) must be kicking themselves right now! Michael's pure and unadulterated touch make this a rare jewel to be possessed!

"Ain't No Sunshine", "Got To Be There" and "In Our Small Way" are such buoyant and catchy medleys, Gordy's investment surly paid off. It's this sort of hard work and dedication which drove him to the stratosphere 10 years later!

Further remakes of "Rockin' Robin" and "You've Got A Friend" goes to show you his amazing versatile vocal-range and erratic spins to existing concepts. All in all, I'd definitely would recommend you go out and buy a copy!

1. Ain't No Sunshine

2. I Wanna Be Where You Are

3. Girl Don't Take Your Love From Me

4. In Our Small Way

5. Got To Be There

6. Rockin' Robin

7. Wings of My Love

8. Maria (You Were the Only One)

9. Love Is Here and Now Your Gone

10. You've Got A Friend

11. I Hear A Symphony

Stick around for a comprehensive review on his next album "Ben".

Through Thick and Thin

"Through Thick and Thin" is a scrapped Romantic track from The Moving Violation Sessions. This song could not be found until the year 2000. When Motown issued the Dancing Machine/Moving Violation package. One of many combined albums from The Jackson 5 Era.

Through Thick And Thin

Time Explosion

"Moving Violation" comes to a resolution on a Jazzy note satirizing Motown's indifference to the plight of The Jackson Five. So off they go to CBC cause "Time waits for no one".

I am in love with the song! It's great how one can use his/her imagination to compose such an awesome tune!

Lyrics

Jackson 5
Time is going faster everyday
There's a time explosion
Gotta make the most of love today
There's a time explosion

Tito
Moving in perpetual motion

Jermaine
Don't you leave your brother behind

Tito
Think that means our love and emotion

Michael
Slow it down and take your time

Jermaine
Life is tough but you can make it (make it)
If love is just a chance
You got to take it

Jackson 5
Time Explosion
There's a time explosion

(6x repeat)
Tic toc tic tic toc ti

Time is going faster everyday
There's a time explosion
Gotta make the most of love today
There's a time explosion

Tito
Baby let the pendulum swing

Jermaine
I wanna take you flying high

Tito
The hands of time will be our wings

Michael
Where love takes us, we'll fly

Jermaine
Life is tough but you can make it (make it)
If love is just a chance
You got to take it

Jackson 5
Time Explosion
There's a time explosion

Time! Time!

Jermaine
Life is tough but you can make it (make it)
If love is just a chance
You got to take it

Jackson 5
Time Explosion
There's a time explosion

Time Explosion
Time Explosion

Call of The Wild

A high rhythm accolade from the album Moving Violation. Originally meant to feature as a B-Side on "Body Language". A now defunct J5 single What a shame.

Lyrics

Jackson 5
Call of the wild
Call of the wild
Call of the wild

Jermaine
People tell me this
And people that me that

Michael
Ooo, everybody thinks they know
Where it's at

Jermaine
Life is getting harder
And it's tearing me down

Michael
It's time to pack my bags
I'm gonna leave this town

Jackson 5
The call of the wild is calling me
The wilderness is beckoning me
The call of the wild is calling me
Where nature moves over the free

Call of the wild
Call of the wild
Call of the wild

Jermaine
People quibbling' this
And people quibbling' that

Michael
The ones with the money
Just keep on getting that

Jermaine
There ain't no solitude
The quiets getting loud

Michael
Any place you want to go
Gotta fight right through the crowd

Jackson 5
The call of the wild is calling me
The wilderness is beckoning me
The call of the wild is calling me
Where nature moves over the free
The earth and the sky and the sea
The numbers of signs you can see
The call of the wild is calling me
The call of the wild is calling me
The wilderness is beckoning me
The call of the wild is calling me

[repeat to fade]

Breezy

From their last Motown record Moving Violation comes a high-tempo Love Ballad. To a girl, nothing makes a good Romantic without a tenor and bass. Michael and Jermaine just hit the spot.

- Jackson 5 Lyrics

All I Do Is Think Of You

All I Do Is Think Of You did moderately well for The Jackson Five

Michael Jackson vocals are pure, raw, and downright authentic and crispy! Clearly Michael Jackson's voice was becoming a sensation! "All I Do Is Think of You" can be found on #7 of Moving Violation

This song can also be found on the back side to their single "Forever Came Today". Which gained so much airplay, the track became a radio hit in it's own right!

- Jackson 5 Lyrics

Body Language-Do The Love Dance

Borrowing a few bars and rhythms from Edwin Star and KC and The Sunshine Band, The Jackson Five record "Body Language" in preparation for Disco. The jam comes off as track 5 of Moving Violation.

Body Language Do The Love Dance

Honey Love

"Honey Love" wraps up side-A(of Moving Violation) on a futuristic spacey note. I wonder if "Honey Chile" had anything to do with it?

Lyrics

Ooh, Ah
Baby, you got honey love
It's sweeter than candy
You got honey love
I've got to have it, that honey love
Sweeter than candy, that honey love
I keep on yearning all in my sleep
You've got me burning for that sweet treat
Baby, you got honey love
Sweeter than candy, that honey love
Keep on making, that honey love
Keep on shaking, that honey love
Keep on making, that honey love
Making this right
I'll keep taking, that honey love
Oh I can't believe love can be so neat
Oh, your sweet love, girl, just can't be beat
Baby, you got honey love
It's sweeter than candy, that honey love
Honey love, honey love, honey love, honey love
Let's get down, down, down, down
Let's get down, down, down, down
That honey love
I must be dreaming
Oh baby
Girl, you got me screaming
Honey, oh honey
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah
Come on baby
Come on, do it, come on, baby
Keep on making, keep on, keep on doing it
Candy love, sugar love, get down, get down
Honey Love
Candy love, sugar love, get down, get down
Honey love

You Were Make Especially For Me

Coming off the third selection of Moving Violation is a silky-smooth R&B love song which fits quite nicely into the Disco scene.

You Were Made Especially For Me - The Jackson 5

- Jackson 5 Lyrics

Moving Violation-The Song

The title track from Moving Violation by The Jackson Five. Very reminiscent to the Philly-Soul wave so rampant around that time. I particularly liked the fire engine affects. Thought that was quite adventurous. An attempt to recapture their innocent debut just 5 years prier.

- Jackson 5 Lyrics

J5 Cover-"Forever Came Today"

The Jackson 5 Forever Came Today reached #1 on The Billboard Dance Charts

The Jackson Five borrowed a fresh late 60's tune from Diana Ross's archives to feature on their final Motown LP Moving Violation. Thus christening a Soulful 1968 number into a more peppy Disco rhythm just eight years later(click Here to listen on the former version). Michael & Jermaine arrayed it with something altogether different. Switching back and fourth on leads. Inserting Funky riffs and grooves which would later become prominent on Michael Jackson's Off The Wall album.

Listen to the Disco-Tech Version Here.

Moving Violation

Moving Violation would be the last Jackson Five LP from Motown Records

If you've missed out on my past critiques, be sure to visit their Steeltown record "Big Boy", followed with a plethora of Motown labels "Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5", "ABC", "The Third Album", "The Jackson 5 Christmas Album", "Maybe Tomorrow", "Lookin' Through The Windows", "skywriter", "GIT: Get It Together", and "Dancing Machine". Now for our final Jackson Five reassessment, I give you "Moving Violation".

Moving Violation Review

The Jackson Five wave farewell on their last Motown record "Moving Violation". From a more Funkier Discosque interpretation of "Forever Came Today" to the all-out imaginative ode to time "Time Explosion", The LP in many ways supersedes their last effort!

Although it took them three records to get it right, "Moving Violation" just goes to prove The Jackson 5 are ready to translate into the age of Disco!

1. Forever Came Today

2. Moving Violation

3. (You Were Made) Especially For Me

4. Honey Love

5. Body Language(Do the Love Dance)

6. All I Do Is Think Of You

7. Breezy

8. Call of the Wild

9. Time Explosion

10. Through Thick and Thin

And that ends our 9 album journey with The Jackson Five. Join me as I look into Michael Jackson's early Solo Career.

The Mirrors of My Mind

Dancing Machine closes on a high-riffed Funky accolade with "The Mirrors of My Mind". The only track other then Dancing Machine with an uptempo beat I can follow.:)

The Mirrors Of My Mind

It All Begins and Ends With Love

For old times sake, Michael & Jackie take turns leading in another Soul Ballad Love Song. This can be found on The Jackson 5 LP Dancing Machine.

Like most tracks on this album, it didn't move me much. However, a prom setting will do magic.

- Jackson 5 Lyrics

If I Don't Love You This Way

Michael Jackson dominates the seventh track off of Dancing Machine. "If I Don't Love You This Way" was also first meant for another Motown solo album(which we will get into after finishing up with The Jackson Five).
A very calm Romantic Ballad just ripe for Mr. Jackson's new-found vocals!

- Jackson 5 Lyrics

What You Don't Know

From The Jackson Five LP dancing Machine comes a pic-me-up-temple Disco groove. Originally meant to feature on one of Michael Jackson's Motown solo LP's. But was launched as a French single instead.

What You Dont Know - The Jackson 5

- Jackson 5 Lyrics

The Life of The Party

O.K. so not all Disco's to my disliking. And this I could make an exception. Especially since it's Michael Jackson. The watery guitar riffles are amazing.

"The Life of The Party" comes from the J5 album Dancing Machine.

- Jackson 5 Lyrics

Dancing Machine

The Jackson 5 briefly got back to prominence with their successful Dancing Machine single reaching #2

So far, our Jackson Five journey has taken us through "Big Boy", "Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5", "ABC", "The Third Album", "The Jackson 5 Christmas Album", "Lookin'Through The Windows", "Skywriter", "GIT: Get It Together", and now may I present to you "Dancing Machine"!

Dancing Machine Review

After the singles success, The Jackson Five briefly had a small comeback! Unfortunately, the outdated material Motown was throwing at them caused the boys to lose flavor with the pubic once more. Finally, their father had it up to here. Once again, he was window-shopping, looking for a new label.

Only three tracks stand out on this album. Michael's fully matured vocal for"What You Don't Know" and "The Mirrors of My Mind" are quaint if not enjoyable. The extravagant remix to "Dancing Machine" is the only number pullings it's weight on this LP.

Those previous tunes aside, there's not much to write home about on this record. The Jackson 5 must go label hopping before it's too late.

1. I Am Love

2. Whatever You Got, I Want

3. She's a Rhythm Child

4. Dancing Machine

5. The Life of the Party

6. What You Don't Know

7. If I Don't Love You This Way

8. It All Begins and Ends With Love

9. The Mirrors of My Mind

--------------

Stay tuned, or you'll get a "Moving Violation".

She's A Rhythm Child

Aside from Michael Jackson's vocal's(similar to Dancing Machine), "She's A Rhythm Child" doesn't really do it for me. Coming from the third track off The Jackson Five LP Dancing Machine. Michael's voice has now completely reached it's zenith of maturity! Just wait till he has free rein!

- Jackson 5 Lyrics

Whatever You Got, I Want

Whatever You Got, I Want debuted off The Jackson Five album Dancing Machine

"Whatever You Got, I Want" debuted off The Jackson Five LP Dancing Machine. Other then a raw guitar riff, I wasn't impressed with the single.
The song was written by The Marcello Brothers with Larson.

- Jackson 5 Lyrics

I Am Love

I Am Love would be the last single to score the top 20 for The Jackson 5

"I Am Love is a top 20 hit off of The Jackson Five LP Dancing Machine. Released in 1975.

During the 1970's a lot of bands would break a track into two parts-A slow and fast side. The Temptations were famous on pioneering this feat. I wasn't all that impressed with "I Am Love" other then it's rugged synthesizer and spacey keyboards.

Jackson 5 Cover Pride and Joy

A Get It Together outtake and a cover to Marvin Gaye's 1963 hit(which you can listen to Here).

The Jackson Five dusted the 45 off and updated the sound to give it a more pre-Disco sensation. However, Marvin Gaye will always be a classic.

Lyrics | Pride And Joy lyrics

Dancing Machine Single

The Jackson Five manage to squeeze one more hit with Dancing Machine in 1974-Reaching #! on the R&B Singles Charts

Finally, Get It Together closes on a high-tempo groovy note! we come to the jelly of the record! Michael Jackson(then only 15) introduces "The Robot" to the viewing public(click Here to watch it live). This would only be a foretaste of what was to come on Motown's 25th Anniversary. An unforgettable experience!

Dancing Machine - Jackson 5

- Jackson 5 Lyrics

J5 "You Need Love Like I Do"

A cover to "Gladys Night & The Pips"(listen over Here) 1970 hit which made a #3 for the charts. The song is on track 7 of Get It Together.
I'm not too fond of either version(although some are wild for it).

Lyrics | Love Is The Thing You Need lyrics

It's Too late To Change The Time

From The J5 comes a rather intriguing B-Side to "Dancing Machine" off the album Get It Together.

How appropriate this is for 1973. The 60's are gone, "The Beatles" have broken up, now Motown's losing steam. The mom 'n pop shops gave way to grocery stores. crime was only on the increase.
But as they say, your mind will always be the same.

- Jackson 5 Lyrics
